Stram and Szurek power Beavers to a 2-0 victory at Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. (Bearcat Pitch) – Bemidji State University soccer cruised to a 2-0 victory at Northwest Missouri State University Sunday to wrap up two-match Missouri road swing. The victory allows the Beavers to improve to 2-2-0 on the season.

The Beavers scored 22 minutes and 29 seconds into the match to take the lead. Sophomore Sarah Stram (F, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) netted her first goal the season, taking a pass from Rachel Scheller (Sr., M, Maple Grove, Minn.).

Bemidji State put the match away in the second half getting a goal by sophomore Christine Szurek (F, Andover, Minn.) in the 51st minute. The play started with a midfield pass from Raquel Thelen (Fr., M, Andover, Minn.). Szurek then deflected a shot into a virtually open net for her second goal of 2014.  The assist was the first of Thelen’s collegiate career and her third point of the season.

Bemidji State held a 14-13 advantage in total shots, with a 9-6 edge in shots on goal, while the teams split corner kicks, 4-4.

Senior goalkeeper Sonja Barr (Duluth, Minn.) was perfect in goal, stopping all six of the Bearcats’ shots for her first win and first shutout of the season.

The Beavers (2-2; 1-0 NSIC) continue their eight-match string of road games to open the season traveling to Bismarck, N.D. Saturday for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference battle with University of Mary. Sunday the team will wrap up the weekend with a Sunday afternoon match at Minot State University.
