Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Senior forward Sara Wendt scored her 16th goal of the season in the 77th minute to lift the No. 6 Bemidji State University soccer team to a 1-0 win over the University of Mary on Friday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium. The Beavers heavily attacked the Marauders in the second half, outshooting them 14-3 over the final 45 minutes, to improve to 14-0-2 overall and 11-0-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this season.
Wendt entered the game tied for sixth in the nation and tied for first in the NSIC in goals scored and posted her seventh game-winning goal to lead the nation. Senior forwards Allyson Smith and Erin Becker each assisted on Wendt's goal, boosting Smith's season assists to eight and Becker's to two.
Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Stumbaugh played all 90 minutes in the goal for the Beavers, posting her 12th victory and sixth shut out of the season. Her shut out streak is currently at 228:54 after making five saves against UMary.
Both teams combined for just five shots in the first half, led by BSU with three within the first 25 minutes of play. Stumbaugh saved both first-half shots by the Marauders while UMary recorded just one save in the first half.
Bemidji State began to take control of the offense in the second half, totaling eight shots within the first 27 minutes. Following an offside call against BSU, Becker gained possession of the ball before pushing to Smith on the left side of the pitch before punching the ball up to Wendt 14 yards from the goal. Wendt snuck the shot past one close defender as it dribbled into the net for the game-winning goal.
Bemidji State returns to the pitch with a road game Sunday, Oct. 31 at Minot State University, beginning at 12 p.m.
