Beavers clinch NSIC regular season crown

Box Score

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- The Bemidji State University soccer team posted a 5-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston Friday at Chet Anderson Stadium to clinch the program's second Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular-season title and move to 16-0-2 on the season.

The victory extends the Beavers' unbeaten streak to a new program record 21 matches (19-0-2) and cements BSU as the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NSIC Tournament. The Beavers will host the No. 8 seed, Northern State University, at Chet Anderson Stadium Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Seven different BSU players etched their names on the scoresheet, led by Halle Peterson, Emma Huelsnitz, and Sara Wendt, who each posted a goal and an assist, while Mason Schilling cast the deciding goal.

BSU got on the board early when Schilling found the back of the net from the middle of the box. Wendt and Erin Becker were credited with assists on the play threading passes through the UMC defense. Fourteen minutes later, Wendt netted her NSIC-leading 17th goal of the season, with help from Becker and Huelsnitz, to take a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

The second half belonged to BSU as the Beavers outshot the Golden Eagles 33-1 during the final 45 minutes of play with three finding the back of the net. Halle Peterson gave BSU a three-goal cushion in the 47th minute of play when she headed in a rebound off a corner kick. Huelsnitz scored BSU's fourth goal of the afternoon when Peterson kicked the ball out of a scrum in the box and the freshman made good on her second goal of the season from the top of the box. Senior captain Megan Dahl completed the BSU scoring by finishing a corner kick from Megan French with a header past the UMD goalkeeper.

The Beavers used a committee in goal to record their 10th shutout of the season. Alyssa Stumbaugh collected the win and improved to 14-0-1 on the season logging 45 minutes, while Georgiana Harber and Edie Frantzen each played just over 22 minutes in the second half to preserve the clean sheet. Harber posted the Beavers only save of the match as the Beavers finished with a 23-1 edge in shots on goal.

The 16-0-2 Beavers improved to 13-0-2 in league play to record their second unbeaten regular season. BSU will now open the playoff season hosting the first round of the NSIC Tournmanet
