Top-ranked Buckeyes too much for Beavers in series opener

BSU Women’s Hockey falls 4-0 to No. 1 Ohio State Saturday

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Down 1-0 after 40 minutes, the Bemidji State University women's hockey team was on the heels of the tying the nation's No. 1 team Ohio State University Saturday afternoon. However, a goal 24 seconds into the final frame by the Buckeyes (5-0-0, 5-0-0 WCHA) began a three-goal, third period in which the Beavers (2-4-1, 0-3-0 WCHA) could never recover.
Ohio State claimed the 4-0 victory over the Beavers in game one of their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with game two slated for 2:01 p.m., tomorrow.

Ohio State scored the first goal of the game 15:04 into the opening period when Kenzie Hauswirth scored her second goal of the season.

Bemidji State held the Buckeyes scoreless in the second period and even looked to tie the game late in the period but a shot by freshman Raeley Carney was a few inches off the mark and rang the crossbar.
The Buckeyes then took control of the game after the second intermission when Sophie Jacques scored an unassisted goal just 24 seconds into the third. Jacques then scored her second goal of the period just 4:33 later to put the Buckeyes up 3-0. Ohio State then scored 1:20 later from Jenna Buglioni to cap-off the 4-0 victory.

Ohio State dominated in the offensive zone and out-shot the Beavers 38-14 in the game. Junior Hannah Hogenson totaled 34 saves in the game but falls to 1-4-1 on the season with the loss.

Her counterpart Raygan Kirk earned a 14-save shutout and improved to 2-0-0 this season.

Bemidji State earned three power-plays in the game and came up empty on all three chances but its penalty kill looked good and killed off two chances for the Buckeyes.

Bemidji State will attempt at a series split with Ohio State tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet at Sanford Center for game two at 2:01 p.m.
