Beavers hang with No. 1 Buckeyes but fall 5-2 in series finale

BSU Women’s Hockey tied 2-2 with No. 1 Ohio State late but OSU scores three unanswered

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Sophomore Kendra Fortin scored her first career goal 6:01 into the third period to tie the game at 2-2 with No.1 Ohio State University, but the Buckeyes answered with three consecutive goals to claim a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon and earn the series sweep. The Beavers fall to 2-5-1 on the season and are now 0-4-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play.

Junior Hannah Hogenson kept the Beavers in the game and made 45 saves including 30-of-32 through the first 40 minutes.

Ohio State began the scoring late in the first period after Emma Maltais centered the puck from behind the goal and it deflected off a Beaver stick and into the back of the net with just 1:45 left in the first period.

The Buckeyes (6-0-0, 6-0-0 WCHA) would then add to their lead in the second period when Riley Brengman scored her first of the season 6:34 into the middle frame. Bemidji State would answer back for first time just 3:22 later when Genevieve Hendrickson scored off a 2-on-1 rush for her second goal of the season.

The Beavers would enter the second intermission trailing the defending national champions by one but 6:01 into the final period, Fortin shot the puck from the point that fooled goaltender Amanda Thiele and found the back of the net for her first career goal and to tie the game at two.

However, the Buckeyes would put the pressure on and with 9:28 remaining, Sydney Morrow put the Buckeyes back up by one with her second goal of the season. The Buckeyes didn't stop there and just 26 seconds later, Sophie Jacques scored her sixth goal of the season for the two-goal lead.

Ohio State would eventually add an empty net goal with two seconds remaining to claim the 5-2 victory.

Bemidji State was out-shot in the game 50-10 but Hogenson was tracking the puck well and stopped a season-high 45 shots. She falls to 1-5-1 on the season while Thiele improves to 4-0-0 after making eight-of-10 saves.

Bemidji State will have a quick turnaround before its next series and will travel to University of Wisconsin Thursday and Friday of next week for another bout with a top-ranked opponent, the Beavers' fourth series versus a top-10 team. BSU and Wisconsin begin their WCHA series Thursday, Oct. 20 at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wis., at 7:00 p.m. followed with game two at 7:00 p.m., Friday.
