Beavers lose by one to the Golden Bears in non-conference action

Bemidji State defeated 77-76 by Concordia-St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team suffered their first loss of the season at Concordia University-St. Paul, 77-76 in a non-conference game, Tuesday night in St. Paul, Minn. Junior John Sutherland led the team in scoring dropping 23 points.

Bemidji State and Concordia-St. Paul (1-2) were neck and neck for a majority of the night with 12 lead changes and 10 tied scores. In the first half both teams shot above 50%, 53.0% for the Beavers and 51.7% for the Golden Bears. Unlike the previous games BSU's threes would not go in after only going 1-for-9 in the first half, but it that did not matter as the Beavers had a 40-34 lead at the end of the first half. CSP got out to a quick 12-point run to start the second half, followed by a BSU nine-point run. Through the rest of the game the lead traded hands. Down by one the Beavers were down to their last chance with 0.2 seconds left on the clock. Mohamed Kone would lob the inbound pass Dalton Albrecht who was unable to defect the ball into the basket.

The Beavers were nearly unstoppable in the paint scoring 46 points and were able to grab 19 offensive rebounds. Behind Sutherland in points was junior Dalton Albrecht recording 17 points by going 5-for-10 on the floor and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

Bemidji State out-rebounded Concordia-St. Paul 41-25 and limited the Golden Bears to four second chance points while scoring 22 themselves. For the second time this season coming off the bench graduate student RJ Smith led the team in rebounds recording nine in his 24 minutes of play. Albrecht and Kone round out the top three rebounders with seven a piece.

The Beavers will have their home opener this week as they host Oak Hills Christian College and the University of Minnesota, Morris. The opener tips of at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the BSU Gymnasium, followed by a 6 p.m. game on Friday.
