BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women's basketball team falls in its first Norther Sun Intercollegiate Conference game against University of Minnesota, Crookston 69-67, Tuesday night in the BSU Gymnasium. Sam Pogatchink recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Beavers (2-1, 0-1 NSIC) started the game off hot scoring 11 points before the Golden Eagles (1-4, 1-0 NSIC) were able to get on the board. BSU had its best shooting performance in the first quarter going 6-for-14 (42.9%) from the field.
Trinity Yoder started the scoring with a layup and finished the quarter with seven points leading the Beavers. With one minute to play BSU held a 14-point lead and ended the quarter up 20-10. Starting the second quarter
Maddie Schires converted on two deep threes that gave the Beavers their biggest lead of 15. UMC were able to cut the defect to 10 at the end of the half. In the second half the Golden Eagles were able to end the third quarter with an eight-point run and were only down by two going into the final quarter. In the last quarter there was five lead changes and UMC finished the game up on top 69-64.
Yoder led the Beavers in points since the first basket, she finished the night with 20 points going 7-for-16 from the field, 1-for-2 for three and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Schires and Pogatchink were behind Yoder both tallying 12 points. Brooke Theis and Yoder led the team with three assists on the night.
The Golden Eagles were able to grab 12 more rebounds than the Beavers with 51. Both teams were able to follow their shots with BSU recording 16 offensive and UMC finished with three more with 19. Pogatchink with her 11 rebounds led the team and freshman Alyssa Hill was second with six. Hill was also able to block two of UMC's shots leading the Beavers.
The Beavers will head to Washington to compete in the Lynda Goodrich Classic Thanksgiving weekend. In Bellingham, Wash., the Beavers will take on Saint Martin's University and Western Washington University on Nov. 25 and 26.
