BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Bemidji State University women's basketball team defeated St. Martin's University 67-49 in its first game at the Lynda Goodrich Classic in Bellingham, Wash., Friday afternoon. Senior
Maddie Schires led the Beavers (3-1, 0-1 NSIC) with 15 points all coming from three-pointers.
The Beavers and Saints (2-4) were neck-and-neck through the first quarter and a half with five lead changes and with SMU's largest lead being five with under four minutes in the first quarter.
Isabel Majewski's three-pointer gave the Beavers their last lead change with 5:28 left in the first half. BSU kept its foot on the gas going into the half up seven points. The Beavers came out of the half were able to extend their lead to 15 points by shooting 8-for-18 (44.4%) from the field and 2-for-3 for three. After the final horn sounded Bemidji State earned the 67-46 victory.
Behind Schires in scoring was
Trinity Yoder and Alyssa Hill both breaking into the double digits scoring 13 and 12 points respectively.
Sam Pogatchnik led the Beavers with five assists and Schires finished behind her with three.
BSU out rebounded SMU 33-22 with 15 of the Beavers rebounds being on the offensive glass. Hill and Pogatchnik both finished the evening with 10. With 12 points and 10 rebounds Hill recorded her first collegiate double-double. The Beavers limited the Saints to five offensive rebounds and limited them to four second chance points. The Beavers will continue in the Lynda Goodrich Classic as they take on the hosts in Western Washington University at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday.
