Beavers hold on to win first NSIC game against Golden Eagles

Bemidji State defeats Minnesota Crookston 79-74

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team wins its first Norther Sun Intercollegiate Conference game 79-74 against the University of Minnesota, Crookston, Tuesday afternoon, at the BSU Gymnasium. Leading the way for the Beavers (5-1, 1-0 NSIC) was junior Dalton Albrecht with 19 points, shooting 9-for-15 (60%) from the field.
 
In the early stages of the game the Beavers and Golden Eagles (0-5, 0-1 NSIC) went bucket-for-bucket before BSU scored 11-unanswered points. With eight minutes to play in the first half BSU had its biggest lead of the game, at 11. Shortly after the Golden Eagles swooped back with a seven-point run of their own and took the lead with two minutes left in the half. The Beavers resounded and went into half tied at 40. The second half was a battle, with six lead changes and eight tied scores. With less than two minutes left in the game freshman Brayden Williams nails a three to give the Beavers the final lead of the night. BSU were able to convert its free throws in the final seconds to finish the game 79-74.
 
The Beavers continue their dominance in the paint scoring 50 points there. Albrecht scored 18 of his 19 points in the paint and John Sutherland scored most of his 15 points there as well. Mohamed Kone finished the night second in scoring for the Beavers with 18 points. Brandon Christlieb and Williams joined the rest of the starts in double figures with 11 and 10 respectively. Williams recorded six assists to lead the Beavers with five coming in the first half.
  
As a team BSU grabbed 32 (23d, 9a) rebounds. Leading the way was Sutherland who finished the night one rebound shy of a double-double with nine. The Golden Eagles snagged 11 offensive boards but the Beavers were able to hold them to only 12 second chance points. BSU swatted three of UMC's shots with Albrecht recording two of the blocks.
  
The Beavers will continue action Dec. 1 as they travel to St. Cloud State University and returns back in Bemidji as they host University of Minnesota, Duluth Saturday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m.
