Beavers travel to San Angelo, Texas for second round matchup versus Angelo State

Bemidji State Football faces undefeated Rams in NCAA Tournament Second Round

BEMIDJI, Minn. – For the second consecutive season, the Bemidji State University Football team hops on a plane and will travel south to participate in the Second Round of the NCAA Division II Football Tournament.
 
The Beavers (10-2), who earned the fourth seed in the Super Region Four bracket, travel to San Angelo, Texas to face No. 1 seed Angelo State University for a trip to the quarterfinal round.
 
The Beavers and Rams (11-0) battle to keep their seasons alive Saturday, Nov. 26 and will kick-off at 1:00 p.m., from LeGrand Stadium on the campus of Angelo State.
 
Bemidji State Notes
  • Bemidji State is fresh-off winning its program record 10th consecutive game last weekend after defeating Winona State University 31-7 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Beavers earned their second consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division championship and shared the overall NSIC championship during the regular season.
  • Bemidji State will face Angelo State for the first time in program history.
  • Angelo State enters Saturday's matchup as the No. 2 team in the American Football Coaches' Association top-25 poll and completing the programs first undefeated regular season in its Division II era.
  • Angelo State ranks third in Division II by allowing just 217 yards per game and fourth in points allowed (11.7).
  • Angelo State led the Lone Star Conference in both offensive yards per game (427.6) and yards allowed (216.5).
  • Bemidji State makes its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament this weekend and is 2-1 in its history. This is the second consecutive season the Beavers have made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • BSU's Brandon Alt recently achieved career milestones at Bemidji State and surpassed Jordan Hein as the program's career passing yardage and touchdown leader last weekend.
  • Alt was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Year this season and is a nominee for the 2022 Harlon Hill Award as the nation's top DII student-athlete for the second consecutive season.
  • Alt is third in Division II with 3,686 passing yards and second with 37 passing touchdowns.
  • His primary target this season has been senior Brendan Beaulieu who recently broke his own program record for most receiving yards in a season with 1,445. He is second in Division II in receiving yards and leads the nation with 18 touchdown receptions which is tied for a program record
  • He is already the program's all-time career receiving yards leader (3,666), receiving touchdowns leader (37) and career receptions leader (209) to cement himself as one of the all-time Beaver greats.
  • Jalen Frye leads the Beavers' rushing attack and has totaled 781 yards on 196 attempts (4.0/a). He has also totaled eight rushing touchdowns to lead the team while Jarret Gronski (6) and Sage Booker (5) each follow.
  • Bemidji State is one of the highest powered offenses in the nation and are 10th by averaging 39.6 points per game. It also averages 481.5 yards per game which is sixth Division II. BSU's primary threat is its passing attack which is third in the nation by averaging 330.4 yards through the air.
  • The Beavers have also had success on third down, ranking second in DII by converting on .530 percent of their third-down chances.
  • BSU's defense is just as formidable and led the NSIC and is 19th in the nation by holding opponents to just 16.7 points per game. The Beavers also hold opponents to just 276.0 yards on offense, 18th in the nation.
  • The Gang-Green defense has held opponents to just a .277 percent success rate on third down for 11th in Division II.
  • Bemidji State is led on defense by linebacker Spencer Wehr who has totaled 62 tackles including 37 solo tackles. He is followed by Colton Herman (56) Max Buduris (50) and Colbey Wadsworth (47).
  • Zollie Kaplan has been unstoppable rushing the quarterback and is eighth in DII with 14.5 sacks this season to stand third in Division II. He has totaled 26.0 sacks in his career and is a 0.5 sack shy of tying Jay Hanson for most in program history.
  • Kaplan has been recognized as one of the top defensive linemen in the country and was named a top-nine finalist for the 2022 Gene Upshaw Award given to Division II's Senior Lineman of the Year.
