Strong second half hands (RV) Minnesota Duluth win over BSU Men’s Basketball

Second half serge pulls Bulldogs ahead of Beavers, 83-68

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team held (RV) University of Minnesota, Duluth to a one-point lead at the half before falling 83-68 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday afternoon at the BSU Gymnasium. Mohamed Kone led the Beavers (5-3, 1-2 NSIC) with 21 points, 15 of which coming in the second half.

Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth (7-2, 3-0 NSIC) battled in the first half with eight lead changes and six tied scores. While the Beavers outshot the Bulldogs 48.3% to 38.2%, UMD capitalized on BSU's eight turnovers with nine points. The Beavers were unable to score off the Bulldogs' turnovers since they only turned the ball over once in the first half. Coming out of halftime UMD scored six points to extend its lead.

Unlike most nights the Beavers did most of their scoring outside the paint. 30 points on the night came from three pointers, 30 from points in the paint, four from the free throw line and four from lone twos. Kone reached 20 points for the second time this season to lead the Beavers in scoring on the night with four made threes. John Sutherland finished behind him with 14 points shooting over 50% (7-for-12) on the night. Rounding out the top-three scorers and also breaking into the double digits was Brandon Christlieb with 10.

Bemidji State were able to out rebound Minnesota Duluth in the first half 21-16 but the Bulldogs finished the game with one more rebound than the Beavers with 33. Both teams walked away with nine offensive rebounds but UMD were able to come away with 14 second chance points to BSU's nine. Dalton Albrecht led the way for the Beavers with seven rebounds on the night with Sutherland and Kone behind him with five.

The Beavers hit the road as they take on Minnesota State University, Moorhead on Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m., tip-off against Northern State University the following day.
