Beavers fall at No. 15 St. Cloud State 2-1 Saturday afternoon

BSU Women’s Hockey falls to 4-23-1

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team put together a great team effort but No. 15 St. Cloud State University scored two goals in the third period to comeback and defeat the Beavers 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

The Beavers (4-23-1, 1-21-0 WCHA) held the Huskies (15-14-0, 9-14-0 WCHA) off of the scoreboard through the game's first 47 minutes but goals from Addi Scribner and Courtney Hall at 7:24 and 16:13 of the third period powered the Huskies to the 2-1 victory and series sweep.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first period but Bemidji State broke through just 1:03 into the second period when Claire Vekich redirected a Khloe Lund shot that beat goaltender Sanni Ahola for the game's first goal while on a Beaver power play.

The goal was Vekich's team-leading fifth goal of the season and her fourth power-play goal and was assisted by Lund for her second assist of the season and Reece Hunt for her fourth.

The Beaver defense held the Huskies to just 11 shots through the first 20 minutes and junior Hannah Hogenson turned aside all 11 shots to keep SCSU off of the scoreboard. However, the Huskies came biting back in the third period and out-shot BSU 14-8 in the final frame including scoring the game tying goal at 7:24 and later the game-winning goal at 16:13.

Bemidji State finished the game with 26 shots on goal while the Huskies rebounded and totaled 27 to out-shoot the Beavers. Hogenson made 25 saves for the Beavers in between the pipes.

The Beavers will now return home and hosts University of St. Thomas for a two-game league series at Sanford Center Feb. 3-4.
