Thompson’s 60 saves keeps Beavers in tight battle with No. 1 Badgers

Junior goaltender Abbie Thompson stops 60 shots fourth most in program history

MADISON, Wis. – Junior goaltender Abbie Thompson kept the Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team locked in a 0-0 tie through the first two periods at No. 1 University of Wisconsin Friday night in LaBahn Arena but the top-ranked Badgers broke through in the third scoring four goals en route to a 4-0 victory.

Thompson stopped 60-of-64 shots including the first 35 shots of the game and recorded the program's fourth highest save total in its 26-year history. She is just the fourth Beaver goaltender to make 60 saves in their history and is the most saves by a BSU netminder since Lauren Bench stopped a program record 70 shots in four overtimes in 2020.

Thompson was dialed in from the start turning aside a perfect 18 shots in the first period and 16 shots in the second to keep the score locked at 0-0 after the first 40 minutes of play.

After stopping the 35th shot by the Badgers, Wisconsin's Casey O'Brien got a hold of the rebound and ended the shutout for Thompson just 50 seconds into the final frame. The goal opened the flood gates for the Badgers as Katie Kotlowski made it 2-0 7:20 later and Britta Curl and Cassie Hall scored the third and fourth goals with just 3:54 and 49.5 seconds remaining, respectively.

Thompson records the loss and falls to 0-5-1 on the season despite the near record-breaking performance while the Beavers fall to 0-6-1 on the season and 0-3-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play.

The Beavers will attempt to bounce back tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet for game two with puck drop slated for 2:01 p.m.
