BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team suffered a 3-1 defeat from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Saturday evening in its final non-conference series of the season. Senior
Kayla Santl scored her first goal of the season for the lone scoring for the Beavers.
Â
Bemidji State dominated play to begin the game, out-shooting the Engineers (3-0-3) 11-1 in the first period. However, the Beavers were held off the scoreboard by RPI goaltender Amanda Rampado to keep the score locked at 0-0 after the first 20 minutes.
Â
RPI then took advantage of the long change in the second period and scored the go-ahead goal while on a power play when Morgann Skoda netted her second goal of the season 4:34 into the middle frame.
Â
The Beavers responded well and just 1:40 later, Santl deked past the RPI defense and fired the puck high over the blocker and into the net for her first goal of the season.
Â
Â
She was assisted by sophomore
McKayla Zilisch who earned her first point of the season on the play.
Â
The Engineers had their own response and with 7:41 to play in the frame, Nyah Philip scored her second goal of the series to retake the lead for RPI.
Â
The Beavers continued to press and eventual out-shot the Engineers 31-23 in the game, but Rampado was lights out and held BSU off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. RPI made it a two-goal lead 12:14 into the third period to seal the victory and exit Bemidji with a 1-0-1 series victory.
Â
Rampado finished the game with 30 saves while Bemidji State goaltender
Abbie Thompson stopped 20-of-23 shots in the loss.
Â
With the loss the Beavers fall to 0-3-1 before Western Collegiate Hockey Association action begins next weekend.
Â
The Beavers will hit the road to begin WCHA play and face St. Cloud State University at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, Oct. 13-14.
