Beavers down Mavericks in overtime to pick up first win

BSU Women's Hockey defeats Minnesota State 3-2 in overtime Friday night

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Senior Taylor Nelson scored 14 seconds into the three-on-three overtime to send the Bemidji State University to its first victory of the season Friday night at Sanford Center defeating Minnesota State University, Mankato 3-2 in the extra period.

The Beavers (1-11-1, 1-8-0 WCHA) scored the most goals of the season netting three into the back of the net.

Freshman Talya Hendrickson put the Beavers on the board first with her first collegiate goal scoring just 2:03 after the opening face-off.

She was assisted by her sister Genevieve who created the rebound chance for Talya.

The Beavers took the one-goal lead into the first intermission and played most of the second period with the lead but just before the period's end, freshman Hailey Armstrong scored a crucial goal with just 52.3 left in the frame.

It was the sixth goal of the season for Armstrong who paces the team and snapped a four-game goal scoring drought.

The Beavers played 15 minutes with the two-goal lead with all signs showing towards their first win of the season. However, the Mavericks made things interesting with 4:58 to play with a goal from leading goal scorer Jamie Nelson. Nelson wasn't finished and 2:18 later, she tied the game after a fortunate bounce sent the forward in behind the Beavers' defense on the breakaway.

The two teams would head into the three-on-three overtime but BSU earned a later power play before the end of the period and just 14 seconds into overtime, Nelson tipped in a Khloe Lund shot to send the Beavers to victory for the first time this season.

The win snapped an 18-game winless streak that started on Feb. 4, 2023 of last season.

Lund led the Beavers with two points in the game collecting two assists while seven Beavers recorded a point.

Freshman Eva Filippova earned her first collegiate victory in between the pipes after she stopped 24-of-26 shots. She improves to 1-2-0 on the season.

Bemidji State will attempt at its first WCHA series sweep since 2021 tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet again for game two at 3:01 p.m.
