Beaver Soccer secures home field advantage for first round of NSIC Tournament

BSU Women’s Soccer defeats Minnesota Duluth 1-0 to earn fourth seed in conference tournament

Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team earned home field advantage for the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Tournament for the seventh consecutive season Thursday night after defeating University of Minnesota Duluth 1-0 to end the regular season.

The Beavers finished the regular season with 25 points in league standings to earn the fourth seed in the conference tournament and will host fifth seed Augustana University at Chet Anderson Stadium Monday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m.

BSU finishes the 2023 regular season at 9-3-6 overall and 7-3-4 in NSIC play.

Needing three points and Augustana and University of Mary to earn no more than one point Thursday evening, the Beavers wasted little time to jump in front of the Bulldogs (6-6-6, 5-4-5 NSIC) when sophomore Katrina Barthelt took advantage of a goalkeeper mistake and scored 64 seconds after kick-off.

The goal was her 10th of the season and becomes just the second player within the NSIC to reach double-digits in goals. She finishes second for the NSIC scoring title trailing Concordia University-St. Paul's Katie Anderson who scored 11 goals during the regular season.

The Beavers then relied on their defense and goalkeeper Edie Frantzen to preserve the one-goal lead and proved up to the task as BSU earned its ninth clean sheet of the season.

Minnesota Duluth continuously applied pressure on the Beavers producing 15 shot attempts and seven shots on goal but Frantzen was dialed in and turned aside all seven shots she faced to earn the most saves in her career.

Bemidji State finished with four shot attempts and three on goal but made the most of its few chances during the match.

The first round of the NSIC Tournament kicks-off Monday with the Beavers versus the Vikings at 3 p.m. The winner of the match will move on to face the winner of NSIC regular champions St. Cloud State University or Minnesota Duluth the following Friday. The NSIC Tournament Championship is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 12 at the highest remaining seed following the first round.
