Beavers rally back from three-goal deficit to earn point at Lake Superior State Friday night

BSU Men’s Hockey falls in three-on-three overtime after rallying from three-goal deficit

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – Down 3-0 after the first 18 minutes of play, the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team rallied to force overtime against Lake Superior State University and earn a point in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings Friday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The Lakers (4-3-0, 1-0-0 CCHA) earned the extra point in the three-on-three overtime however, when Connor Milburn scored the game-winning goal 2:26 into the extra frame.

Lake Superior State took advantage of a slow start for the Beavers when John Herrington scored 5:02 after the opening puck drop. The Lakers then took advantage of two Beaver penalties to score two power-play goals from Harrison Roy with 4:27 left and Dawson Tritt with 1:57 left to take a commanding 3-0 lead before the first intermission.

Sophomore Kirklan Irey stopped the Laker scoring streak with an unassisted goal for his second of the season with just 1:02 in the period.

Bemidji State carried that momentum from Irey's marker into the second period when sophomore Lleyton Roed scored his team-leading seventh of the season just 1:37 into the middle frame.

The goal also tied the White Bear Lake, Minn., native for the conference lead, ties him for third most in Division I and has scored a goal in four consecutive games.

The Beavers couldn't produce the game-tying goal before the second intermission but 2:44 into the third period, freshman Jake McLean was the benefactor of a well place Austin Jouppi shot that deflected off the far pad and straight onto his stick where he buried the equalizing goal into the wide-open net.

BSU totaled nine shots in the final period but couldn't produce the go-ahead goal and the two teams would need the three-on-three overtime period to decide the victor.

Unfortunately, the Lakers would earn the extra point in the CCHA standings when Milburn sniped the puck past Gavin Enright for the game-winning goal 2:26 into overtime.

The Beavers did earn one point in the standings however, and remain in first place with a total of seven league points.

BSU out-shot the Lakers 30-24 in the game including 13-5 in the second period but falls to 3-4-0 (2-1-0 CCHA) on the season.

Senior Gavin Enright earns his second loss of the season and falls to 2-2-0 after allowing four goals.

The Beavers will attempt to salvage the series split and take four-of-six league points from the Lakers tomorrow evening when the two teams meet again for game two at 5:07 p.m. CT.
