MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Freshmen
Talya Hendrickson and
Kate Johnson each scored for the Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team but a six-goal second period for No. 3 University of Minnesota powered the Gophers to a 9-2 victory in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series opener at Ridder Arena.

All hailing from Warroad, Minn., the Warroad line of T. Hendrickson, Johnson and
Genevieve Hendrickson scored each goal for the Beavers and recorded all six points. T. Hendrickson and Johnson each posted a goal and assist for their first career multi-point efforts while G. Hendrickson assisted on each goal.

The Beavers had the start they needed scoring the game's first goal halfway through the first period when T. Hendrickson scored her second career goal and second in three games with 9:23 remaining in the first period.

The Gophers would strike before the end of the period to even the score at one at the first intermission.

Minnesota then exploded for six goals in the second period to take a commanding 7-1 lead over the Beavers.

Bemidji State stopped the scoring run in the third period when Johnson scored her first collegiate goal for the green and white 7:02 into the final frame after a nice rush play generated by the Hendrickson sisters.

The Gophers would strike twice more before the final horn to capture the 9-2 victory and earn three more points in the WCHA standings.

Junior
Abbie Thompson turned aside 27 shots in 40 minutes earning the loss while freshman
Eva Filippova came in to play the third period and stopped 13-of-15 shots.

The Beavers will attempt at the series split tomorrow afternoon for game two at 2:01 p.m.
