BSU Women’s Hockey rallies for 3-1 win over Robert Morris in Battle at the Burgh opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team overcame a one-goal deficit after the first period to comeback and defeat Robert Morris University 3-1 Friday night in the first game of the Battle at the Burgh tournament in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Bemidji State freshman Hailey Armstrong scored twice in the game including the game-winning goal for her second career multi-goal night. Freshman Eva Filippova turned aside 22-of-23 shots by the Colonials (7-12-0) including the final 20 shots in the game to earn her third victory of the season.

Robert Morris started the game quick scoring the first goal on just their second shot 2:07 into the frame after Janelle Evans tipped in a shot from the point while on a Colonial power play.

The Colonials carried the one-goal lead into the second intermission but senior Taylor Nelson tied the game just 3:56 into the middle frame with her sixth goal of the season. Just nine seconds later and one second shy of tying a program record for the fastest two goals, Armstrong netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season assisted by Nelson and Gabbie Smith.

The Beavers carried the one-goal lead into the final period and relied on its defense to bring the team to victory by holding RMU to just five shots during the third period. Filippova turned aside all five shots in the period and Armstrong sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 35 seconds remaining for the Beavers second consecutive win.

It is the first back-to-back wins for the Beavers since the season opening series last season.

The line of Armstrong, Smith and Nelson scored all three goals in the game for BSU with Armstrong (2g), Nelson (1g-1a) and Smith (2a) each earning two-points.

Filippova improves to 3-3-0 in just her sixth start of her collegiate career and has backstopped the Beavers to consecutive victories.

The Beavers will now play for the tournament championship tomorrow evening and will go up against No. 4 Colgate University at 4 p.m. CT.
