ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team was within striking distance of No. 14 St. Cloud State University through the first two periods, but the Huskies exploded for four goals in the final 20 minutes to secure a 6-1 victory and series sweep Sunday evening at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Â
Junior
Mattias Sholl stopped 38 shots including 29-of-31 through the first two periods to give the Beavers a chance but the Huskies' offensive attack was too much as SCSU scored four times off 13 shots in the final period. BSU produced 28 shots offensively but were stymied by Husky goaltender Isak Posch who turned aside 27-of-28 shots he faced.
Â
Bemidji State (8-12-0) got off to a slow start in the game as scored two goals within the first seven minute of the opening period. However, the Beavers answered back with a goal from
Logan Acheson for his second goal of the season with 11:55 to play in the first.
Â
Â
The Beavers relied on its netminder in the second period with Sholl facing 20 shots in the middle frame, but he was tracking the puck well and stopped all 20 shots he faced to keep the Beavers within one following the first 40 minutes of play.
Â
However, the Beavers' defenses gave way in the third period and scored four goals in the frame including two power-play markers.
Â
Bemidji State was called for seven penalties in the game and its penalty kill went 5-for-7 while it earned three power plays but came up empty on all three.
Â
The Beavers close out the 2023 calendar year with the loss falling to 8-12-0 on the season but resume Central Collegiate Hockey Association play with a road trip to Ferris State University, Jan. 5-6.
