Beavers look to extend conference lead over Minot State and Mary this weekend

Bemidji State travels to Minot State and Mary in final weeks of season

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team tries to extend its three-game lead over Minot State University and University of Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division play. The Beavers start their weekend at Minot, N.D., looking to sweep MSU on the season at 5:30 p.m., followed by another season rematch against the Marauders the following day at 3:30 p.m.
 
The Series vs Minot State
·         MSU leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 12-10.
·         Bemidji State and Minot State last met earlier this season on Dec. 31, 2022, with an 81-73 win by BSU in Bemidji, Minn.
·         Minot State leads the series 8-3 when playing in Minot, N.D.
·         BSU and MSU first met Nov. 25, 2011, a 74-45 win by BSU.
 
The Series vs Mary
·         Mary leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 19-15.
·         The Beavers and Marauders last met Dec. 30, 2022, earlier this season, with a 77-67 win by BSU in Bemidji, Minn.
·         Mary leads the series 9-7 when playing in Bismarck, N.D.
·         BSU and Mary first met Dec. 18, 1971, with a 92-87 win by the Marauders.
 
 
Fast Break Bemidji State
  • The Beavers split their games last weekend starting off defeating Southwest Minnesota State University 83-76 then losing in heartbreaking fashion 75-76 to University of Sioux Falls in overtime.   
  • BSU is 9-3 in its last 12 games, while dominating at home this season with a recorded of 9-2. The Beavers have not fared as well on the road tallying three wins and six losses.
  • Bemidji State is fourth in the NSIC North Division, holding a three-game lead over Mary and Minot State, who are fifth and six in the conference, respectively.
  • John Sutherland earned his third NSIC North Player of the Week after averaging a double-double on the weekend with 21.5 points and 11 rebounds. Sutherland also had a season high six assists against Sioux Falls and five in the win over SMSU.
  • Sutherland recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds against USF.
  • Mohamed Kone recorded his second double-double of the season against Sioux Falls as well. This is the first time this season two student-athletes have recorded a double-double in the same game.
  • Dalton Albrecht, Kone and Sutherland all put up double figures in both games on the weekend. Brayden Williams and Johnny Tennyson both had one game with double digit scoring.
  • Albrecht scored six three pointers on the weekend, only missing one attempt, also adding 9-12 (75.0%) from the field in weekend action.
  • In the first half BSU shot 19-29 (65.5%) against SMSU and ended its 11th game of the season shooting 50% or better from the field at 53.6%.
  • Sutherland leads the Beavers in scoring with 389 points and is sixth in the conference averaging 19.5 ppg after scoring 43 points on the weekend. Sutherland's shooting percentage is just north of 60% and leads the NSIC and maintains his top 30 rank in Division II.
  • In rebounding, Sutherland is on top for Bemidji State with 185 rebounds, 9.3 rebounds per game and is second in the conference just behind Nick Reid of Upper Iowa University.
  • Bemidji State bounced up to fourth in the NSIC averaging 79.5 points per game. The Beavers are ranked 12th in scoring defense allowing 76.1 points per game.
  • The Beavers are 15th in turnovers and are 12th in assist to turnover ratio with a 1.05 ratio.
  
Scouting Minot State
  • Head Coach Matt Murken starts his 11th season with the Beavers (138-147).
  • MSU (9-11, 6-10 NSIC) is currently on a four-game slide after narrowly falling to Concordia University-St. Paul 85-86 and Minnesota State University, Mankato 66-70, last weekend.
  • MSU averages 74.8 points per game shooting 44.2% from the field and 36.0% from behind the arc.
  • Khari Broadway, Cam'rom Dunfee and Jaxon Gunville have all racked up over 200 points on the season with Broadway leading the Beavers with 265 points. In the game earlier this season Broadway led the MSU with 19 in the loss to BSU.
 
Scouting Mary
  • Head Coach Jack Nelson starts his second season with the Marauders (21-27).
  • Mary (10-10, 6-10 NSIC) handed Minnesota State its fourth loss in a row defeating it 69-67, then fell to Concordia- St. Paul 62-67, last weekend.
  • Mary averages 70.3 points per game shooting 43.4% from the field and 36.9% from behind the arc.
  • Senior guard Kam Warrens leads the Marauders in both points (269) and rebounds (119). Warrens is only one of two student-athletes to record a double-double against Bemidji State this season, earlier this year he scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss to the Beavers.
