Four-goal second period powers (RV) Mavericks to sweep over Beavers

Minnesota State earns series sweep over BSU Women’s Hockey with 4-0 victory Saturday

MANKATO, Minn. – (RV) Minnesota State University, Mankato scored a flurry of goals in the second period against the Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team Saturday afternoon leading to a 4-0 victory and series sweep for the Mavericks in Mankato, Minn.
 
Bemidji State held the Mavericks scoreless in the first and third periods but Minnesota State broke through in the middle frame scoring all four goals including three goals just 3:08 apart.
 
Minnesota State's Shelby Guttormson started the barrage of Maverick goals just 1:12 into the second period. MSU then made it 2-0 when Kennedy Bobyck scored at the 4:03 mark. Just 17 seconds later Brooke Bryant made it 3-0 for the Mavericks. Minnesota State put the icing on the cake when Kelsey King scored at 11:27 of the period.
 
The Beavers finished the game out-shooting the Mavericks 22-18 in the game but couldn't solve MSU goaltender Alexa Berg who collected the shutout.
 
Sophomore Abbie Thompson totaled 14 saves for the Beavers but earns the loss and falls to 2-3-0 this season.
 
Bemidji State earned five power plays in the game but came up empty on all five chances while its penalty kill held the Mavericks scoreless on their two opportunities.
 
The Beavers are now 5-26-1 on the season and eighth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings with six points and a 2-24-0 league record.
 
Bemidji State now returns home for the final series of the 2022-23 regular season. The Beavers will play host to University of Minnesota Duluth for a two-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 3:01 p.m.
