No. 8 Bulldogs skate past Beavers in series opener Friday afternoon

BSU Women’s Hockey falls to No. 8 Minnesota Duluth 6-0 in series opener

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth Women's Hockey team used a five-goal second period to down the Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team 6-0 Friday night in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series opener at Sanford Center.

The Beavers fall to 5-27-1 (2-25-0 WCHA) with the loss while the Bulldogs improve to 22-8-3 (16-8-3). Bemidji State is now locked in the eighth seed for the WCHA Playoffs and will travel to either Ohio State University or University of Minnesota for the first round next weekend.

The Beavers held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard through most of the first period but just before the period's end, Naomi Rogge scored UMD's first goal with just 48 seconds left in the opening period.

The Bulldogs wasted no time to extend their lead when Mannon McMahon made it 2-0 just 1:14 into the second period. Minnesota Duluth then made it 3-0 with a goal from Anneke Linser at 7:25 of the period. The Bulldogs just kept scoring and while on a five-minute major penalty, scored three power-play goals in the final five minutes of the period to make it 6-0. Ashton Bell, Rogge (2) and Mary Kate O'Brien all scored while on the Bulldog power play.

Minnesota Duluth then cruised to victory after holding the Beavers off of the scoreboard in the final period to earn the 6-0 win.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Beavers 35-12 in the game with 11 shots coming while on the power play including nine while on the five-minute major.

UMD finished 3-for-5 while on the power play while the Beavers came up empty on their four chances.

Bemidji State's Hannah Hogenson made 29 saves for the Beavers but falls to 3-24-1 on the season.

The Beavers will honor their three seniors tomorrow afternoon for their final home game of the 2022-23 season when the two teams meet for game two at 2:01 p.m. back at Sanford Center.
