Yoder’s 19-point fourth quarter lifts Bemidji State over Minot State

Yoder makes 13 free throws, all in the fourth quarter, to set new career program record

Minot, N.D. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team won its first away Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game defeating Minot State University 70-61 in Minot, N.D. on Friday evening. Trinity Yoder came up big for the Beavers with 19 points in the final quarter to help lift BSU over MSU. Yoder also made 13 free throws, which gives her 383 in her career for a new program record.
 
Bemidji State improves to 7-14 on the season and 4-13 in the NSIC, while Minot State falls to 9-14 overall and 5-12 in the conference. BSU has now won the last seven against MSU to tie the all-time series at 11. 
     
Bemidji State and Minot State started the game trading off baskets. MSU pulled a head 10-7, but an Isabell Majewski triple knotted the game at 10. In the final minutes of the quarter, Minot State finished on a four-point run, going into the second quarter up 14-10.
 
Bemidji State shut down the run Minot State started at the end of the quarter with a run of its own to tie the game back up following a pair of baskets by Alyssa Hill. Lorelei McIver made MSU's first three of the game to put Minot State back on top by three at the 8:18 mark. Jamie Skeggs extended the Minot State lead to its largest of six at 22-16 near the midway point of the second. Brooke Theis made a layup assisted by Yoder to start a four-point run to end the half 24-23 in favor of Minot State.
 
Minot State bodied the Beavers in the first half coming away with six offensive rebounds. Alyssa Hill had a strong first half leading both teams in scoring with 10 along with two boards. Both teams knocked down two three-pointers.
 
BSU added four more points to their end of the half run to take their first lead of the game from Erin Barrette's second made three-pointer to go up 28-24 two minutes into the third quarter. MSU bounced right back tying the game up with a pair of baskets. Trailing by five, Yoder found Hill for a layup to start a 7-0 run to push BSU back in front. Yoder capped off the Bemidji State run with her first points of the game with a layup at the 2:11 mark for the 37-35 advantage. After a few more lead changes, Bemidji State ended the third with the lead when Majewski sunk a jumper for the 42-41 advantage.
 
Majewski connected on her third three of the game to start a seven-point run early in the final quarter. After being held quiet in the first half and a majority of the third quarter, Yoder scored eight straight points for Bemidji State to jump the lead to seven. Sam Pogatchnik picked a great time for her first points of the game with 3:28 remaining, hitting a three-pointer to push the lead into double-digits. Yoder then hit nine free throws down the stretch, with the program record coming with 17 seconds left. Barrette closed the game out, where else but from the foul line to give Bemidji State the 70-61 victory.
 
    
Yoder, after being held scoreless through the first 28 minutes of play, led Bemidji State with 21 points, 19 coming in the final quarter of play. A majority of her points came from the free throw line, accounting for 13 points. Hill shot 7-for-11 (63.6) from the field for 14 points, second for the Beavers. Barrette and Majewski also finished in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Yoder also came close to a double-double with eight assists.
 
Pogatchnik was held quiet with three points but came in big on the boards with nine to lead BSU. Yoder was second on the team with eight, close to recording the first triple-double. Rachel Koenig rounded out the top-three in rebounding with six. The Beavers have recorded a block in every game this season and the streak continues after Yoder came away with one swatted shot.
 
The Beavers look to build off their two-game win streak as they travel to the University of Mary, tomorrow (Saturday) for a 5:30 p.m., match up. The Marauders are coming off an 84-77 win over University of Minnesota Crookston.
