Beavers fall in conference opener 6-4 against Concordia-St. Paul

BSU Baseball comeback falls just short in first game of NSIC Play

MAUSTON, Wis. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team fell 6-4 in its first game of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Sunday afternoon against Concordia University-St. Paul at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston, Wis.

The Beavers drop their first game in NSIC play and fall to 1-15 on the season.

Bemidji State got on the board first in the top of the second when Carter Simon drove in Logan Barrick off a base-hit down the right field line. The Golden Bears responded in the bottom half of the inning however, with two runs off sacrifices and an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead.

The Beavers gained a run back in the third when Zach Listiak drove in his sixth run of the season with a single to centerfield. BSU was held off the scoreboard over the next four innings while the Golden Bears extended their lead to 6-2 with a three-run fifth inning.

Bemidji State added a run in the eighth to make it 6-3 when Jack Munson hit his team-leading fourth double of the season that drove in James Wirt. After holding CSP scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, the Beavers attempted to rally back in the ninth inning after a lead-off walk and later Wirt drove home Isaiah Biehn with a single to right field. Bemidji State had the go-ahead run on the basepaths after loading the bases with two outs but its comeback fell just short after recording the final out.

Bemidji State totaled nine hits in the game out-hitting CSP 9-7 in the game. Simon paced the Beavers with three hits and went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Wirt and Munson each followed with two hits with Wirt going 2-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI while Munson finished 2-for-5 with a double and RBI.

Will Lavin pitched 5.0 innings for the Beavers and falls to 0-4 on the season after allowing six runs, four earned, off five hits, gave up four walks and struck out six batters. He was replaced in the sixth inning by Konrad Kisch who pitched three innings of scoreless baseball and allowed just two hits, two walks and struck out three in his fourth appearance of the season.

The Beavers and Golden Bears wrap-up their three-game series tomorrow afternoon when they meet again for a doubleheader at Woodside Sports Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m., CT.
