Cougars earn game three victory over Beavers

BSU Baseball falls 18-4 in series finale versus Sioux Falls

WAYNE, Neb. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team fell to University of Sioux Falls, 18-4, Monday afternoon in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series finale in Wayne, Neb.
 
The Cougars (3-19, 2-6 NSIC) jumped out to a quick lead over the Beavers (2-21, 1-7 NSIC) after scoring five runs in the second inning. USF then made it 7-0 with runs in the third and fourth before the Beavers got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Logan Barrick hit an RBI single.
 
The Beavers then earned two more runs in the seventh after scoring on a pair of wild pitches to pull within four but failed to drive in another run after loading the bases.
 
Sioux Falls responded in the eighth inning with another five-run inning then added six in the ninth before the Beavers added another run in the bottom of the ninth to make it 18-4.
 
Bemidji State totaled nine hits in the game led by freshman Jackson Schaffer who went 3-for-5 with a double. The Beavers left 12 runners stranded on the base paths while earning seven walks. Barrick followed Schaffer earning two hits in four at bats with a walk and drove in one run. Ty Karger and Zach Moritz were the other Beavers who recorded RBI in the game while BSU scored two runs off wild pitches.
 
Freshman Riley Bersaw earned the loss on the mound, his fourth of the season, after allowing five runs, four earned, off five hits and walked three in 1.2 innings. Lucas Pierce, Ethan Lung, AJ Gengler and Jesse Johnson all came into pitch in relief. Lung led the team with 3.0 innings pitched and allowed no runs, just three hits, walked two and struck out one.
 
Bemidji State will return to NSIC action tomorrow afternoon when the Beavers travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on No. 22 Minnesota State University, Mankato in a doubleheader at Bishop Mueller Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
