LIBERTY, Mo. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team fell in both games of its doubleheader against William Jewell College Saturday in Liberty, Mo. The Beavers fell victim of a walk-off home run in game one losing 5-4 and then fell 17-6 in game two.
The Beavers started fast in the first game of the day when
Hunter Daymond singled in his first plate appearance and
Jack Munson followed with a two-run home run to put the Beavers up 2-0 in the first inning. The Cardinals (5-3) answered in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to bring the score to 2-1 and then later tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the second. The score remained tied until the fourth inning when another sacrifice fly put the Cardinals up 3-2.
The Beavers responded in the sixth inning after a balk with the bases loaded drove in a run and later BSU took advantage of a wild pitch to score the go-ahead run to make it 4-3. However, in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single. After failing to score in the top of the seventh, William Jewell hit the walk-off solo home run to claim the 5-4 victory.
Senior
Logan Barrick pitched 5.2 innings for the Beavers and allowed just four runs off 13 hits while adding three strikeouts while senior
Jake Matise earns the loss after pitching 0.2 innings and allowing the walk-off home run.
Munson paced the Beavers at the plate by going 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season and two RBI while
Zach Listiak was 2-for-2 with two singles and was hit by a pitch.
Game two was all Cardinals as they totaled 17 runs off 12 hits including five home runs and one grand slam. Bemidji State scored three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to finish the game with six.
Derek Dolezal paced the Beavers with two runs batted in while
Ty Karger and
Carter Simon each had one. Karger paced the team with two hits and finished 2-for-4 at the plate and scored twice while Dolezal, Simon,
Jack Munson and Listiak each collected a hit.
Freshman
Riley Bersaw earned the loss on the mound after pitching 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs off eight hits, walked one and totaled three strikeouts.
Bemidji State will look to earn its first win of the season for the fourth and final game at William Jewell. First pitch between the Beavers and Cardinals is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT.
