CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bemidji State University Softball team dropped its first game of the day 4-2 to Millersville University but followed it up with a big win against Ashland University 9-1 on the third day of The Spring Games at Legends Park in Clermont Fla. After going down early to the Golden Eagles in the first inning the Beavers score nine unanswered runs to win in five innings.
The Beavers are 4-2 in the Spring Games with four more games left. BSU has started the season 7-7 with strong pitching and hitting performances in Clermont Fla.
Ashley Herold in the first inning with two runners in scoring position drove both home with a single against Millersville. In the bottom of the first the Marauders cut the deficit to one on a sacrifice fly from Aleese Angelo. Millersville brought the game level with a leadoff homerun by Alyssa Stover. MU piled on two more runs with the final score set in the second inning, 4-2.
The Beavers had six hits in the game,
Molly Houts and
Elaina Christiansen both recorded an extra base hit with a double.
Alexa Christenson,
Ashley Herold,
Morgan Benedict and
Aimee Christenson all singled.
Kora Martin drew a walk in her first at bat and scored for the first run of the game. Aimee Christiansen also walked in the second inning.
Senior
Kyla Damerow (1-5) pitched a complete game against the Marauders. Damerow got help from the defense by forcing 11 fly outs and six ground outs, she walked two batters and gave up four earned runs. Alex Schafer (7-1) from MU earned the win with eight strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs.
Ashland drove in the first run of the game with a two-out double from the pitcher Cassidy Shaffer.
Grace Gumiela scored the first run for the Beavers after advancing home on a wild pitch in the third inning. Martin and
Mariah Stevenson followed suit adding two more runs with Christiansen and Herold picking up the RBI's.
Emmarie Yeager led off the fourth inning with a triple but made it home after a throwing error by AU. The following inning Yeager doubled driving in Stevenson and
Stephanie Ferguson to put the Beavers up 6-1. BSU did not stop there with a bases clearing triple three batters later from
Aimee Christenson to end the game 9-1 in the fifth inning.
Bemidji State had a season-high 11 hits with four for extra bases. Gumiela, Herold, Martin and Yeager all had a multiple hit game, with Yeager finishing with a double and triple.
Aimee Christenson recorded her first triple of the season with the final at bat of the game.
Aimee Christenson led the team with three RBI's and Yeager finished right behind her with two. Benedict drew the only walk for the Beavers.
Stella Dolan (6-2) earned her third win in just two days. Dolan pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, one walk and one earned run. She has an ERA of 3.37 in her 45.2 innings pitched.
Bemidji State continues in The Spring Games on Thursday with two morning games starting with Kentucky Wesleyan College at 8 a.m., followed by Notre Dame College at 10:30 a.m.
