CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bemidji State University Softball team split its games on the penultimate day at The Spring Games with a big win over Kentucky Wesleyan College, 13-2, then fell to Notre Dame College 0-3 in a pitchers' duel in Clermont, Florida. The Beavers recorded 16 hits over KWC but their bats fell quiet with four hits to NDC.
The Beavers maintain their .500 record after splitting their games today for a record of 8-8. BSU is 5-3 in The Spring Games and have outscored its opponents 37-22.
Bemidji State started the scoring early with a two-out double from
Ashley Herold to score two runs in the first inning. The Panthers responded back in their first at bats with a two-out double to center sending home one run by Allie Dunn. The Beavers followed up the first inning with four runs in the second with RBI's, from
Morgan Benedict,
Alexa Christenson and
Grace Gumiela. KWC tried to match pace but only scored one with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second. Both teams were quite in the second inning before seven unanswered runs from Bemidji State to end the game.
Mariah Stevenson and Gumiela led the Beavers with three hits. Stevenson added to the teams 16 hits with three singles and Gumiela was a home run shy of hitting the cycle.
Alexa Christenson and
Emmarie Yeager joined Gumiela with a triple and Herold and Yeager doubled. In her first at bat of the season
Elle Hastings drove in a run with a single. Gumiela and
Alexa Christenson led the team with four RBI's and Herold was behind them with two.
Kyla Damerow (2-5) earned her second win of the season against Kentucky Wesleyan. She went four innings, striking out two batters, while walking two and giving up two earned runs. Hastings made her second pitching appearance in the fifth inning finishing the game allowing two hits. In the bottom of the fifth BSU turned its first double play of its Florida trip with a 6-4-3.
Notre Dame College took an early lead in the top of the first after Katelyn DeWeese put herself in scoring position after drawing a walk with a stolen base. The Falcons added two more runs throughout the game to go up 3-0 at the end of the fifth. Bemidji State was unable to send a runner home falling in its last game of the day.
BSU had four hits in the game, all singles,
Alexa Christenson, Elaina Christianson, Herold and
Aimee Christenson all got on base for the Beavers.
Kora Martin and
Molly Houts were all able to advance a runner with sacrifice hits in the game.
Stella Dolan (6-3) pitched a complete game striking out a season-high seven batters in seven innings. Dolan walked two batters and gave up two earned runs. Allison Weilnau (3-3) earned the win with nine strikeouts, giving up four hits, walking zero batters and not giving up a run.
Bemidji State wraps up its time in The Spring Games tomorrow (Friday) with two games starting with Mercy College at 10:30 a.m., followed by St. Michael's College at 1 p.m.
