Beavers fail to overcome early deficits in doubleheader at Minnesota Crookston

BSU Baseball falls in both games of series opening doubleheader at UMC

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Bemidji State Baseball team fell in both games of its series opening doubleheader at University of Minnesota, Crookston Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. The Golden Eagles (24-14, 14-6 NSIC) earned a seven-inning 11-3 victory in game on then followed with a 16-5 win in nine innings.
 
The Beavers now fall to 2-33 on the season and are 1-19 in league play.
 
Bemidji State was held to one hit in the first game of the day which was a two-RBI single by junior Jack Munson in the sixth inning. The Beavers scored their other run in the seventh when Derek Dolezal scored off a wild pitch. BSU drew four walks in the game to reach base a total of five times. Hunter Daymond stole base after drawing a walk and continues to lead the team with seven stolen bases.
 
Junior Will Lavin (1-6) was on the mound to start and pitched 4.0 innings and allowed six runs off four hits while walking five and struck out a season-high eight batters. He was replaced by Jesse Johnson in the fifth inning and he pitched two innings allowing just one run off one hit and struck out two while not walking a batter. Christian Turner came in to pitch the seventh inning and allowed four runs off four hits, walked three and struck out one.
 
The Beavers had more success at the plate in game two totaling five runs off nine hits but couldn't match the Golden Eagles who scored 16 runs off 14 hits. James Wirt led the Beavers going 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and run scored for his fourth three-hit game of the season. He was followed by Jackson Schaffer who went 2-for-4 with two base hits and scored a run while Hunter Daymond and Riley Czech each hit doubles. Wirt, Derek Dolezal and Munson each drove in runs for the Beavers.
 
Senior Logan Barrick (1-3) made his seventh start of the season and pitched 4.2 innings allowing eight runs off eight hits, walked six and struck out a season-high eight batters. Beau Barry came in to pitch 1.1 innings in relief while Konrad Kisch pitched 2.0 innings and Cam McRoberts pitched the ninth inning.
 
Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston will play their series finale tomorrow at Noon before beginning a five-game road trip to University of Minnesota Duluth and Southwest Minnesota State University Wednesday and Saturday-Sunday.
