BSU Tennis closes out season falling in home match against Mustangs

Nelson/Burger come close to win at No. 2 doubles

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Tennis team finished out the 2023 season falling at home to Southwest Minnesota State by a score of 7-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday inside Gillett Center.

Bemidji State closes out the season 2-15 overall and 1-10 in NSIC play. In doubles, Southwest Minnesota State (6-14, 5-6 NSIC) held off a challenge at No. 2 to sweep the doubles point. Isabela Nelson/Laura Burger tallied five games at No. 2 before coming up just short at 7-5. Lexi Leitner/Lily Jones at No. 3 won a pair of games before falling by a score of 6-2. Nicoleta Anestiadi/Emilia Sand fell at the top flight 6-0.

In singles, Anestiadi at No. 1 and Sand at No. 2 each won four games before falling just short in the same set scores of 6-3, 6-1. Burger won two games at No. 3 in the second set, but fell by scores of 6-0, 6-2. Jones also claimed two games at No. 5 with set scores of 6-1, 6-1. Nelson at No. 4 and Leitner at No. 6 lost by the same set scores of 6-0, 6-0.

The Beavers don't have any seniors on this year's team, with upperclassmen Sophie Groen and Isabela Nelson both set to come back as seniors next year. Nicoleta Anestiadi, Lily Jones and Lexi Leitner were all sophomores this season, while Blanca Lopez-Oro, Laura Burger and Emilia Sand were freshmen.
