SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team fell short to Southwest Minnesota State University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader action that was moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., 11-1 and then got walked off 3-2 in game two. The Beavers pulled together a two-run ninth inning to tie the game up but fell short in the end. That came after Logan Barrick pitched eight stellar innings in game two to keep the game close.
Six student-athletes tallied singles in game one for the Beavers: Jackson Schaffer, Jack Munson, Barrick, Hunter Daymond, Riley Czech and Nick Ekstrum. Derek Dolezal also reached base twice drawing two walks. Zach Listiak recorded the only RBI for BSU when he drew a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning.
Will Lavin (1-7) started the game for the Beavers (2-38, 1-24 NSIC) and pitched four innings. Lavin struck out four batters, walked four, gave up eight hits and five earned runs. Jesse Johnson entered the game in the fifth inning making his seventh appearance this season. In two innings of work Johnson struck out one batter, did not issue a walk and gave up six hits and four earned runs. Ryan Chmielewski (3-1) pitched a complete game for the Mustangs (20-11, 12-9 NSIC) striking out six batters, walking one and gave up six hits and one run.
In game two, the Beavers and Mustangs played five and a half scoreless innings before SMSU scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Bemidji State got on the board in the ninth inning starting off with two singles and then a sacrifice bunt from Munson moved the runners to scoring position. Dolezal grounded out to third base but brought the first run in for BSU. Zach Moritz tied the game up with a single through the left side. Chase McDaniel won the game for SMSU in the home half of the inning when he tripled to center field and scored on a throwing error.
The Beavers recorded seven hits in game two with James Wirt and Schaffer having multiple hit games. Just like in game one, all the hits for BSU were singles and joining Wirt and Schaffer with hits were Daymond, Dolezal and Moritz. No walks were drawn by Bemidji State but Dolezal, Listiak and Moritz all got a free pass from getting hit by a pitch.
Logan Barrick started game two for the Beavers and pitch eight innings. Barrick struck out six batters, walked three and gave up five hits and two unearned runs. Christian Lindow (0-3) entered the game in the ninth inning striking out the first batter he saw before giving up a triple that scored the game-winning run that was unearned. Ansen Dulas pitch 8.2 innings for the Mustangs and struck out five batters, did not walk anyone and gave up six hits and two runs. Theo Giedd (3-0) entered the game to get the final out and struck out the batter with two runners on to end the top of the ninth.
The Beavers continue the series tomorrow (Monday) against the Mustangs at noon.
