BSU Baseball drops doubleheader with St. Cloud State

Huskies earn 10-5 and 10-4 victories over Beavers Thursday

BEMIDJI, Minn. – St. Cloud State University collected two wins over the Bemidji State University Baseball team Thursday afternoon in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at BSU Baseball Field. The Huskies (24-13, 16-7 NSIC) earned 10-5 seven-inning victory in game one and then downed the Beavers 10-4 in nine innings in game two.
 
The Beavers now fall to 2-41 (1-27 NSIC) heading into their bye weekend before the final week of the regular season.
 
St. Cloud State got off to a quick start in the first game of the day scoring five runs in the first inning. The Beavers responded in the second and third inning however, with RBI hits from Jackson Schaffer, James Wirt, Jack Munson and Derek Dolezal to pull the Beavers within one.
 
After allowing five runs in the first, sophomore Isaiah Biehn bounced back to hold the Huskies scoreless in the second and third innings but SCSU added to its lead with a three-run fourth inning and two-run fifth for the 10-4 lead. Dolezal hit a solo home run in the sixth to make it 10-5 but the Huskies would claim the five-run victory in seven innings.
 


 
Dolezal finished his day at the plate collected three of the Beavers' 10 hits in the game and went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, walk and two runs batted in. Sophomore Hunter Daymond went 2-for-4 with a triple, double and scored a run while Wirt also went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. In total, six Beavers recorded a hit in the game.
 
Biehn (0-5) pitched 3.2 innings in the game but earned the loss, his fifth of the season, after allowing eight runs off 11 hits, walked three and struck out three. He was replaced by Derek Hoffman who pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed just two runs, both unearned, off just two hits and struck out one.
 
St. Cloud State's Drew Beier (5-2) earned the win for the Huskies after he pitched 5.0 innings and gave up four runs off seven hits and struck out six.
 
The Beavers got off to too slow of a start in the second game of the day after being held scoreless through the first four innings. Bemidji State did however erupt for four runs in the fifth inning but couldn't match the Huskies who put up 10 runs through the first five innings.
 
Bemidji State started its scoring when Ty. Karger hit a three-run home run in the fifth for his third home run of the season.
 


 
BSU then added its final run of the game after scoring on a wild pitch with runners on second and third.
 
Bemidji State totaled eight hits in game two with six Beavers recording a hit and were led by Wirt and Karger who each went 2-for-4. Wirt recorded two base-hits while Karger hit a home run, recorded a base-hit and totaled three RBI to bring his season total to 16, tied for second on the team.
 
Freshman Ethan Lung (0-5) started the game for the Beavers and pitched 3.1 innings allowing five runs, four earned, off six hits, walked two to earn his fifth loss of the season. He was replaced by Lucas Pierce who pitched 1.1 innings and allowed five runs off three hits, walked two and struck out two before Jesse Johnson came in to pitch 3.1 innings and allowed just three hits and no runs while collecting a strikeout. Konrad Kisch pitched the final inning and didn't allow a run or hit while walking one.
 
The Beavers return to action Tuesday, May 2 for a road doubleheader at University of Mary before returning home for their final series of the season next weekend against Minot State University May 5-6.
