HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team scored first against Michigan Technological University but the Huskies rallied to score two-unanswered goals and defeat the Beavers 2-1 in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series opener Friday night at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Mich.
Â
Senior
Eric Martin scored 1:14 into the second period to put the Beavers on the board first but 11 minutes later, the Huskies tied the game and then followed with the go-ahead goal just four minutes later.
Â
Martin scored his third goal of the season and first since Dec. 14 after taking a sharp-angle shot from just above the goal line that snuck past Husky goaltender Blake Pietila just 1:14 into the second period. He was assisted by sophomore
Vince Corcoran who earned his fifth assist of the season on the play.
Â
Â
However, just 11 minutes later, Isaac Gordon tied the game at one for the Huskies and then Matthew Campbell followed just under four minutes later to put MTU on top.
Â
Blake Pietila was strong in net from then on turning aside all 14 shots following the Beavers' goal including nine in the third period.
Â
Junior goaltender
Mattias Sholl kept the Beavers within striking distance turning aside 28-of-30 shots by Michigan Tech but earns his sixth loss of the season and falls to 4-6-0.
Â
Bemidji State's penalty kill held Michigan Tech scoreless on its three power-play chances but came up empty on its own two opportunities with the man-advantage.
Â
The Beavers turn to tomorrow looking to end a two-game losing streak and will attempt at the series split when the two teams meet again for game two at 6:07 p.m. CT.
