BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team put together a collective team effort and battled No. 4/5 University of Minnesota to the final horn but narrowly fell 2-0 to the Golden Gophers in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series opener Friday night at Sanford Center.
Â
The Beavers (3-19-1, 2-15-0 WCHA) went toe-to-toe with the Gophers (17-5-1, 11-5-1 WCHA) in their first home game since Nov. 18.
Â
Freshman goaltender
Eva Filippova was once again tough to beat turning aside 36-of-38 shots in the game but two quick goals by Minnesota in the first period, proved enough to earn Minnesota the victory. For Filippova, it was her third consecutive start stopping 35 or more shots and now boasts a .916 save percentage on the season.
Â
Minnesota opened the scoring 13:55 into the first period when Josefin Bouveng scored her seventh goal of the season. Less than a minute later Alli Franco scored her first goal at the 14:40 mark.
Â
The two goals would be all the Gophers would need as goaltender Lucy Morgan stopped all 24 shots by the Beavers to collect the shutout.
Â
Bemidji State drops its fourth consecutive game and will look to snap the losing skid tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet again for game two at 3:01 p.m.
