Bulldogs bite back in game two to split series with Beavers

Roed’s two goals not enough in 5-3 loss at Ferris State Saturday night

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Bemidji State University sophomore Lleyton Roed scored twice Saturday night but Ferris State University defeated the Beavers 5-3 to earn the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series split in Big Rapids, Mich.

Bemidji State falls to 9-13-0 on the season and 8-6-0 in CCHA play but remain first in the standings with a four-point lead over second place.

For Roed, it's his second multi-goal game of his career and the fourth of his career. Junior Jakub Lewandowski also scored for the Beavers for his first goal of the season. Junior Mattias Sholl made 33 saves in the game but falls to 4-5-0.

Bemidji State was chasing the Bulldogs from the start after FSU scored twice within the first six minutes of the game including just 39 seconds after the opening face-off. The Beavers responded just before the period's end when Roed scored his first of the game with a short-handed marker with just 1:40 left in the frame. It was the first short-handed goal of his career.

The Bulldogs retook the two-goal lead halfway through the second period but once again Roed pulled the Beavers within one with an even-strength goal with 4:53 to play.

The goal was the 11th of the season for Roed to lead the team and the fourth most in the CCHA. He has 11 points (3g-8a) over the last eight games and is second in the CCHA with 23 points this season.

But the Bulldogs responded once again and with just 13 seconds left in the second, went back up by two. Ferris State would then get the crucial next goal 2:40 into the third period to deflate the hope of a comeback.

Lewandowski did pull the Beavers within two with 11:47 to play but the Beavers would only muster the one goal in the period to fall 5-3.

Bemidji State was out-shot 38-24 in the game and went 0-for-3 on the power play. The Beavers' penalty kill allowed one goal on four Bulldog power plays while scoring one short-handed goal.

Bemidji State will have next weekend off from competition leaving plenty of time to rest for the Beavers' next road trip when they travel to Houghton, Mich., Jan. 19-20 for a CCHA series at Michigan Technological University.
