BEMIDJI, Minn. – The (RV) Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team capped-off a five-point Central Collegiate Hockey Association weekend Saturday night by defeating University of St. Thomas 2-1 and earn three more league points. The Beavers rallied from down 1-0 after 40 minutes to score two goals in the final period and secure five-of-six league points over the weekend.
Fifth-year senior
Eric Martin scored while on a five-on-three power play to spark the comeback 36 seconds into the third period followed by junior
Reilly Funk who scored the game-winning goal with 8:19 to play. Senior
Mattias Sholl continued his terrific play in between the pipes and earned his sixth win of the season after stopping 22-of-23 shots.
The teams played to a scoreless first period and 37 minutes of scoreless hockey before St. Thomas' Casy Laylin finally broke the scoring drought with 2:17 to play in the middle frame.
However, with 42 seconds left in the period, the Beavers gained a 5-on-3 and with fresh ice at the start of the third period, Martin capitalized and scored while on the two-man advantage to pull the Beavers within one with his third goal of the season.
The Beavers then had all the momentum from the Sanford Center crowd and with 8:19 to play, fifth-year senior
Carter Randklev sprung Funk in on a breakaway and the Portage, Manitoba native scored on the opportunity for this fourth goal of the season.
Sholl was once again lights-out in the third period and he denied all 11 shots he faced in the final 20 minutes to keep the Beavers in front and complete the five-point weekend.
Randklev, junior
Mitch Wolfe and freshman
Isa Parekh each earned assists in the game for the Beavers' scoring.
Sholl improved to 6-6-1 on the season and 4-3-1 during the month of November while his counter part Jake Sibell falls to 0-3-3 after making 25-of-27 saves.
The Beavers continue play in their daunting month of November next weekend with a home-and-home series with regional rival University of North Dakota following Thanksgiving. The Beavers first play hosts to the Fighting Hawks Friday, Nov. 30 before traveling to Grand Forks, N.D., for game two Saturday.
