Beavers fall in final minutes to Buccaneers

Bemidji State was taken down by Barry University, 70-67, in Miami Shores Tuesday Night

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Bemidji State University Men's Basketball marked its second loss of the season Tuesday night with a final-minutes scoring surge from Barry University. The Beavers are now 3-2 this season and take on Lynn University tomorrow evening in Boca Raton, Fla. 
 
The Beavers came out strong in the first half, marking a 40-27 lead heading into halftime. Daxton Dayley led the Beavers in the first with eight points off the bench. He shot 75% from the field and 66% from the three-point arc in the first half. In the second half, Malang Athian moved into the top scoring spot with 11 points in the last 20 minutes. Athian shot 40% from the field and 25% from the arc during the second half, but also landed both of his free-throw opportunities. As a team, the Beavers shot 34.4% from the field and 100% from the free-throw line during the second half. 
 
As a team, BSU grabbed 20 points off the bench and 34 in the paint. They went 12-21 on layups and Malang Athian marked the Beavers' only dunk. In the end, it all came down to the final four minutes as the Beavers did not trail until a layup from Barry's Akeem Crandon gave them the 62-61 advantage. This Barry lead would be eliminated with a Jalen Patterson layup, 
Followed by some back-and-forth scoring for the teams. From 3:03 remaining on the clock until the buzzer sounded, the Buccaneers would regain a lead and not let up, taking the win 70-67. 
 
Athian took the title of top scorer for BSU this evening with 17 points. Peyton Newbern followed with 12 and Dayley grabbed 10 of his own. Newbern led the rebounding efforts with one on offense and six on defense for BSU. He also marked a team high of six assists. Christian Koonce grabbed four steals during the evening and marked six points with five rebounds. 
 
Tomorrow the Beavers head to Boca Raton, Fla. to visit the Lynn University Fighting Knights at 5 p.m. CST. The game is available on the Sunshine State Conference network and live stats are available on the BSU website. Following this road trip, the Beavers return home until Dec. 6 when they head to Crookston, Minn. to take on the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles. When the Beavers begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play in December at UMC, all games will be available on the NSIC Network for free streaming. Tickets for all home games are on sale now and can be purchased in advance or at the door.
