Golden Bears hold off Beavers to earn 2-1 victory Sunday

Concordia-St. Paul outlasts BSU Women’s Soccer to earn 2-1 win at Chet Anderson Stadium

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Concordia University-St. Paul held off a late push by the Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team Sunday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium as the Golden Bears earned a 2-1 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.

With the loss, the Beavers fall to 8-6-3 and 6-4-3 in conference play. They are tied with Northern State University for seventh in the conference standings with 21 league points. Just one game remains in the 2024 regular season and the Beavers end the regular season at University of Minnesota Duluth Thursday, Nov. 7.

If the Beavers win or earn a draw against the Bulldogs, they clinch a spot into the NSIC Women's Soccer Tournament but will be on the road as the top four seeds have been clinched.

The Golden Bears (11-3-3, 9-3-1 NSIC) used two goals late in the first half to outlast the Beavers second-half push.

Just as it seemed the first half would end scoreless, Golden Bears Lexi Pettit scored her first of the season in the 41st minutes followed by another strike from Sydney Manthana in the 44th minute to stun the Beavers and go up by two at the half.

Aided by the wind in the second half, the Beavers fought hard to pull themselves back into the game and their efforts paid off in the 56th minute when junior Katrina Barthelt scored her NSIC leading ninth goal of the season.

Freshman Breanna Weilert earned her first career assist on the play while freshman Sydney Sutherland earned her second assist.

However, the Beavers couldn't muster the game-tying goal in the final 34 minutes and CSP walked off the pitch with the 2-1 victory and owners of this year's Priam the Pig trophy.

Goalkeeper Sonia Alfieri made seven saves in between the posts for the Beavers but falls to 8-6-3 on the season.

The Beavers will travel east to Duluth Thursday when they clash with the Bulldogs for the regular season finale at 5 p.m.
