Beavers secure spot in NSIC Tournament for 15th straight season behind Barthelt’s five-point night

BSU Women’s Soccer earns seventh seed in NSIC Soccer Tournament

DULUTH, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team need a victory or draw at University of Minnesota Duluth to earn a spot in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women's Soccer Tournament and the Beavers accomplished that task by earning a 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs Friday night at Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.

The Beavers earn the seventh seed and secured a spot in the conference tournament for the 15th consecutive season. The Beavers will either travel to Augustana University or Concordia University-St. Paul depending on the result of tonight's match between the Golden Bears and University of Sioux Falls.

The NSIC Tournament begins Monday, Nov. 11 with first round matches at campus sites followed by the semifinal and championship hosted by the highest remaining seed Thursday and Sunday.

Junior Katrina Barthelt had a career night to power the Beavers to victory scoring twice and adding an assist to tie her career best of five points in the match. With the two goals, she won the NSIC regular season scoring title finishing the regular season with 11 goals.

She started quick in the match scoring her 10th goal of the season in the 10th minute of the match after heading home a corner kick beautifully placed by sophomore Ella Wade.

Barthelt struck again before the end of the half after a long goal kick by graduate Sonia Alfieri sprung her loose behind the Bulldogs defense and poked the ball just past their keeper in the 29th minute.

The Beaver maintained the two-goal lead for the next 51 minutes before freshman Sydney Sutherland scored her second goal of the season after Barthelt sent her in with a nice pass within the penalty area.

Alfieri suffocated any attempt at a comeback from the Bulldogs stopping all five shots she faced which were all in the second half to secure the victory and earn her sixth shutout of the season.

The Beavers end the 2024 regular season with a 9-6-3 record and went 7-4-3 in conference play.

The Beavers await their opponent for the first round of the NSIC Tournament which will be played Monday, Nov. 11 at time to be determined.
