Beavers edge Vikings in overtime after back-and-forth battle

BSU Men’s Hockey earns game one victory at Augustana in overtime

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Junior defenseman Vince Corcoran scored 28 seconds into the three-on-three overtime to send the (RV) Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team to a game one victory over Augustana University Friday night in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Three times the Beavers (4-4-0, 3-2-0 CCHA) held a lead over the Vikings (4-5-0, 1-2-0 CCHA) but three times their lead disappeared in a back-and-forth battle at MidCo Arena. The win at new MidCo Arena was the first for the Beavers in their first road trip to Sioux Falls.

The Beavers got off to the start they wanted while on the road and scored before the clock hit two minutes into the first period. Junior Reilly Funk started the scoring 1:52 after the opening faceoff after redirecting an Isa Parekh shot from the wall to score his first goal as a Beaver after transferring from Northern Michigan University.

The Beavers played with the 1-0 lead for the next 17:07 but just before the period's end, Augustana's Luke Mobley scored with 1:01 to play in the period to tie the game for the first time.

The teams played most of the second period in the 1-1 tie but after a hardworking play below the goal line, freshman Jaksen Panzer fed senior Donte Lawson out front and put the Beavers back on top 8:40 into the middle frame.

The goal was the second of the season for Lawson while Panzer earned his first collegiate point on the play.

For the second time the Vikings would answer before the end of the period and with 3:01 left, Joey DelGreco evened the score at 2-2.

Nearly identical to the second period, the Beavers answered midway through the third when senior Jackson Jutting scored a nifty power-play goal at the 8:43 mark for his third goal of the season and second while on the power play.

Once again, the Vikings weren't fazed and 3:01 after Jutting's go-ahead goal, Tyler Hennen tied the game once again with 8:16 left in the game.

The teams would wind up needing overtime to decide the victor but just 28 seconds in, Corcoran ended the game with his first game-winning goal after senior Jere Vaisanen won an offensive zone faceoff.

Corcoran led the Beavers by scoring the game-winning goal and adding an assist for his third career multi-point game while nine Beavers recorded a point in the game including four different goal scorers.

Senior Mattias Sholl earned the victory in between the pipes, his third of the season, after he made 20 saves in the game.

The Beavers will attempt at their first series sweep of the season tomorrow night for game two scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
