BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team earned two points in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings Friday night after skating to a 2-2 tie with Michigan Technological University but garned the extra point in the standings with a 1-0 shootout victory. FreshmanÂ
Jaksen Panzer scored his first collegiate goal while juniorÂ
Mitch Wolfe scored his second goal of the season as the Beavers moved to 8-7-3 and 5-4-2 in conference play.
The Beavers made an all-out effort at Sanford Center Friday night blocking a season-high 27 shots in the defensive zone, the most in program history since Feb. 7, 2014.
Â
Senior goaltender
Mattias Sholl made 23 saves as he moved to 7-7-3 on the season while six Beavers recorded a point in the game.
Â
Michigan Tech's Logan Morrell opened the scoring 15:44 into the first period with a power-play goal just before the power play expired scoring his fourth goal of the season.
Â
The Huskies carried the one-goal lead into the first intermission but 5:45 into the middle frame, Panzer scored the game-tying goal after flying past the Husky defense and beat Derek Mullahy with a forehand-back-hand move for his first collegiate goal.
Â
Â
The game remained tied 1-1 after the horn for the second period sounded but just 2:26 into the third period, Bemidji State took its first lead of the game when Wolfe went bar-down for this second goal of the season.
Â
Â
The Beavers held onto the lead for most of the period by locking down the Huskies attack diving and scratching their way to 11 blocks in the period. However, with Mullahy pulled for the sixth skater, Morrell scored his second of the game with just 39.7 remaining to spoil the Beaver victory and send the game to overtime.
Â
BSU persevered and after a scoreless three-on-three overtime, Sholl stopped all three Husky shootout attempts and junior
Adam Flammang scored the lone shootout goal to claim the extra league point.
Â
Â
The Beavers are now 4-1-3 over their last eight games including a 2-1-2 record against league opponents.
Â
Bemidji State will attempt to earn three crucial league points tomorrow night when the Beavers and Huskies clash for game two at Sanford Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:07 p.m., and tickets can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com or at the Sanford Center Box Office.
