Beavers extend unbeaten streak to six with series opening victory at LSSU Friday night

Beaver Men’s Hockey defeats Lake Superior State 4-2 to kick-off series

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2) Friday night with a 4-2 victory over Lake Superior State University at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Beavers earned three points in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings and moved to 5-3-1 in league play and 8-6-2 overall.
 
Four different Beavers scored in the game including Austin Jouppi, Jake McLean and Patrik Satosaari who each scored their first goals of the season. Satosaari and Kirklan Irey each had a goal and assist while Donte Lawson collected two assists for his first a career multi-point game.
 
Lake Superior State opened the game scoring within the first five minutes after Sasha Teleguine scored a power-play goal 4:48 into the first period.
 
Bemidji State answered 9:02 later when Jouppi scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
 

 
The first period ended in the 1-1 tie but McLean gave the Beavers their first lead 10:32 into the second frame for his first goal of the season as well.
 

 
The Beavers weren't finished and down a skater in the penalty box, Irey scored his first career short-handed goal and team-leading sixth of the season just 46 seconds laters.
 

 
However on the same power play, LSSU's Johnny Druskinis scored to pull the Lakers back to within one just 1:16 later.
 
The Beavers clung to the one-goal lead after the second period and came out of the second intermission ready to attack the third period. They out-shot the Lakers 14-3 in the period and eventually regained the two-goal lead from Satosaari's first goal of the season with 2:33 to play.
 

 
Mattias Sholl earned his seventh victory of the season after stopping 22-of-24 shots. He's now 7-6-2 on the season and is unbeaten over the last six games.
 
The Beavers will attempt at their first CCHA series sweep of the season tomorrow night for game two. Puck drop is slated for 5:07 p.m. CT between the Beavers and Lakers.
