MARQUETTE, Mich. – Sophomore
Adam Flammang scored twice for his first career mutli-goal night to help the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team earn two points in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings Saturday night in its series finale at Northern Michigan University.
Â
The Beavers (11-15-2, 9-7-2 CCHA) played to a 3-3 tie with the Wildcats (9-14-5, 7-10-3 CCHA) to earn a point in the standings and the secured the extra point with a 1-0 shootout victory after senior
Eric Martin scored the lone goal and junior
Mattias Sholl stopped all three shootout attempts.
Â
The shootout victory capped-off a five-point road weekend for the Beavers as they jump to third in the CCHA standings with 32 points and trail league leader Minnesota State University, Mankato by three points with two games in hand.
Â
After a scoreless first period, Northern Michigan opened the scoring 2:48 into the middle frame with a goal from Grant Slukynsky. The Beavers responded 5:15 later when Flammang scored his first of the game and second of the series after a nice feed from fifth-year senior
Carter Jones from below the goal line.
Â
Â
The Wildcats would retake the lead 3:35 later when Artem Shlaine scored a power-play goal but just 1:08 later, freshman
Eric Pohlkamp tied the game back up with his sixth goal of the season.
Â
Â
The teams would head into the second intermission still locked in the 2-2 tie but the Beavers would score the critical next goal when
Adam Flammang snuck a back-handed shot past NMU goaltender Beni Halasz to put the Beavers up with 11:28 to play.
Â
Â
However, with 5:39 to play, NMU's Andre Ghantous tied the game at three and send the game into the three-on-three overtime.
Â
Neither team could find the back of the net during the extra five-minute overtime and would need the shootout to determine who would earn the extra point.
Â
After each team's first shooters missed, Martin came up next and was able to beat Halasz high glove to put the Beavers on the board first. It was Sholl's turn from then on as he stopped the next two shooters to secure BSU two points in the standings.
Â
Sholl finished the night stopping 26-of-29 shots and three-of-three attempts in the shootout and is now 6-7-2 on the season.
Â
The Beavers have secured seven out of a possible nine points over their last three league games to better their chances at the program's second MacNaughton Cup with three series remaining in the 2023-24 regular season.
