BEMIDJI, Minn. – For the second consecutive series, the Bemidji State University men's hockey team earned five points in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings after defeating Ferris State University 4-1 Friday night to complete the series sweep at Sanford Center.
Â
After the Bulldogs (10-20-1, 6-15-0 CCHA) scored the game's first goal, the Beavers (13-5-2, 11-7-2 CCHA) rallied and scored four-unanswered goals to claim the three league points. BSU now sits in first in the CCHA standings with 37 league points.
Â
Ferris State's Stepan Pokorny put the Bulldogs up 1-0 with a power-play goal in the first period but the Beavers responded in the second when freshman
Rhys Chiddenton scored off the rush when fellow freshman
Jake McLean saucered a pass to the streaking Chiddenton.
Â
Â
Just 1:39 went by before the Beavers took the lead when sophomore
Kirklan Irey one-timed an
Eric Martin pass from the left circle.
Â
Â
The Beavers took the 2-1 lead into the second intermission and late in the third period, scored the crucial third goal when
Lleyton Roed blasted a Chiddenton pass while on a rush play after junior
Mattias Sholl made a diving stop at the other end to spring the play.
Â
Â
Just over two minutes later junior
Jere Vaisanen extended the Beavers' lead to three with his seventh goal of the season to put the game out of reach.
Â
Â
Bemidji State extended its point streak to five games and are undefeated in its last four games (3-0-1) heading into the final two weekends of the regular season.
Â
Sholl helped guide the Beavers to victory after he stopped 17-of-18 shots and is now 8-7-2 on the season.
Â
The Beavers now have five days off before they hit the road to face second-place University of St. Thomas in Mendota Heights, Feb. 23-24. The Tommies are two points back of the Beavers and host red-hot Bowling Green State University tomorrow for their series finale.
