MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – In a wild back-and-forth battle in Mendota Heights, Minn., the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team outlasted University of St. Thomas after downing the Tommies 6-5 in the three-on-three overtime period.
Â
Senior
Jackson Jutting scored 2:20 into the three-on-three overtime to secure two points in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings and keep the Beavers (14-15-2, 12-7-2 CCHA) atop the league standings with 39 points. The Beavers increased their lead to three over the Tommies (13-16-2, 11-9-1 CCHA) who earned one point in the overtime loss.
Â
Six different Beavers scored in the game with 14 recording a point including Jutting and freshman
Jake McLean who each posted a goal and assist in the game. Junior Matties Sholl made 28 saves in between the pipes and earned his ninth victory of the season.
Â
The Beavers started the scoring in the game at 11:22 of the first period when
Austin Jouppi flew in on a breakaway.
Â
Â
The Tommies then tied the game 3:14 later but
Jake McLean retook the lead just 1:30 after after redirecting a
Rhys Chiddenton shot.
Â
Â
The Beavers then went up by two when
Donte Lawson crashed the net and benefited from a friendly bounce to score his second goal of the season 2:40 into the second period.
Â
Â
The Tommies answered back just over four minutes later but
Kirklan Irey put the Beavers back up by two with 6:39 to play in the second with a tip off a
Mitch Wolfe shot.
Â
Â
However, a power-play goal by the Tommies with just 45.3 left in the middle frame stunned the Beavers and St. Thomas tied the game at 4-4 just 3:51 into the third period to ensure a fantastic finish.
Â
The Beavers persevered once again and 1:17 after UST tied the game, Jere Vaisane scored in his third straight game to put the Beavers back in the lead.
Â
Â
The Beavers played most of the final period with the one-goal lead and just as it seemed they would take the regulation victory, St. Thomas scored the gut-punching extra-attacker goal with just 25.8 remaining.
Â
The teams would then head to the extra, three-on-three overtime looking to find victory and 2:20 into the extra frame, Jutting took a breakout pass from
Kyle Looft and sniped the game-winning goal past the glove of UST netminder Aaron Trotter.
Â
Â
The Beavers secured two points with the overtime win for their sixth consecutive game earning a point in the standings and are still unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1) including an active three-game win streak.
Â
Bemidji State still controls its destiny and can lock up home-ice for the quarterfinal round of the CCHA Playoffs with a victory over the Tommies tomorrow night. Puck drop for the series finale is scheduled for 6:07 p.m., from St. Thomas Ice Arena.
