BSU Baseball falls 10-7 and 10-8 in doubleheader at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team scored a total of 15 runs over two games of its doubleheader at Rockhurst University Saturday afternoon but the Hawks earned victories in a pair of seven-inning games.

The Beavers (0-7) fell in game one 10-7 and then 10-8 in game two to the Hawks who improved to 7-2.

Bemidji State totaled seven runs off nine hits in the first game of the day with Jackson Schaffer and Jack Munson each going 3-for-4 at the plate while Schaffer drove in two runs and Munson hit his second double of the season. Sophomore Carter McLaughlin also drove in two runs after he tripled in the fourth inning. Freshman Zach Evenson hit his first collegiate home run, a solo blast in the second inning.

Freshman Jacob Smith pitched 3.2 innings but earned the loss after he allowed eight runs (five earned) off 10 hits, walked one and struck out two. He was replaced in the fourth inning by Matt Filippi who pitched 2.1 innings and allowed just two runs, two hits, walked three and struck out three.

After falling down 6-0 after the first two innings and 7-1 after three, the Beavers rallied to score six straight runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but were cut short of a comeback with a scoreless seventh inning to fall 10-8 in game two.

Bemidji State scored its eight runs off nine hits, walked five times and had one extra-base hit. Junior Hunter Daymond recorded the Beavers lone extra-base hit, a triple for his first of the season. Matt Filippi, Schaffer and Daymond each led the team with two hits while seven different Beavers recorded an RBI.

Junior Jack Barnett started the game and only got through 0.1 innings after he walked four and allowed three runs before he was replaced by Ethan Lung. The Beavers then relied on their bullpen with Lung pitching 1.1 innings, Daniel Pobuda 0.1 innings, Brandon Lind two innings and Ben Kornegay two innings.
