Beavers rally to take three points away from Wildcats in series opener

BSU Men’s Hockey scores three unanswered goals to take 4-2 victory Friday night in Marquette, Mich.

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team rallied to score three unanswered goals Friday night at Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich., to defeat Northern Michigan 4-2 in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series opener.

Four Beavers (Carter Jones, Vince Corcoran, Adam Flammang and Eric Pohlkamp) recorded two points in the game as the Beavers (11-15-1, 9-7-1 CCHA) secured three league points and moved up to third in the league standings with games in hand.

Bemidji State started the scoring 9:09 into the first period when junior Jere Vaisanen finished a nice back-door pass from Flammang to score his fifth goal of the season.

The Beavers would take the one-goal lead into the first intermission but just 55 seconds in the second, Wildcats' Kevin Marx Noren scored a power-play goal to tie the game. Northern Michigan would take the lead with another power-play goal in the period this time from the stick of Grant Slukynsky at 8:09 of the frame.

However, 2:06 later, senior Eric Martin redirected a centering Mitch Wolfe pass to score his fifth goal of the season and extend his point streak to six games, the longest by a Beaver this season.

The Beavers struck again just 2:19 after Martin's goal when Flammang went bar-down from the right circle while on the rush for his fifth of the season.

BSU skated into the second intermission with the one-goal lead and this time scored the critical next goal with 6:32 left in the third period when Eric Pohlkamp scored a one-timer goal from the left circle while on a Beaver power play for his fifth of the season.

Junior Mattias Sholl backstopped the Beavers to their 11th victory of the season and his sixth by stopping 23-of-25 shots. He turned aside the final 19 shots in the game including all 17 shots he faced in the third period. He improves his record to 6-7-1 on the season.

Bemidji State went 1-for-6 with the man-advantage while its penalty kill went 2-for-4.

The Beavers will attempt for their third CCHA series sweep of the season tomorrow when the two teams meet again for game two at 5:01 p.m. CT.
