BRANDON, S.D. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team totaled 17 hits and scored 10 runs in its doubleheader with Southwest Minnesota State University Saturday afternoon but fell in both games in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
The Beavers totaled four runs off seven hits in game one falling 13-4. BSU then fell just short of a comeback after totaling six runs off 10 hits in game two but lost by just two runs, 8-6.
Junior
Hunter Daymond led the Beavers in game one, collecting two hits and drove in two runs off of a double and base hit. Sophomore
Riley Czech also drove in a run with a double while sophomore
Jonathan Gates drove in a run off a base hit.
Sophomore
Christian Lindow pitched 4.1 innings and allowed seven runs off seven hits, walked three and struck out two but falls to 0-4 on the season. He was replaced by
Jack Hoffrogge who pitched 2.1 innings and
Daniel Pobuda who pitched 0.1 inning.
Down 6-2 after the third inning in game two, the Beavers neared a comeback pulling within one of the Mustangs trailing 7-6 after the sixth inning. However, the Mustangs' pitchers held BSU off the scoreboard in the final three innings and added an insurance run in the ninth to claim the 8-6 victory.
Junior
Zach Evenson dominated at the plate in game two going 4-for-5 for his four-hit game with the Beavers. He also drove in a career-high three runs after hitting a two-run home run and driving home another with an RBI single.
Freshman
Beau Thoma and senior
Jack Munson each went 2-for-5 in the game while Czech drove in two runs with a bases loaded single through the left side.
Bemidji State relied on its bullpen with no pitcher pitching over 2.2 innings.
Brandon Lind started the game and pitched 2.1 innings allowing six runs (five earned) off three hits, walked four and struck out three. He was credited with the loss his first of the season to fall to 1-1.
He was replaced by
Daniel Pobuda who pitched 0.2 innings and didn't allow a hit while
Jack Barnett followed and pitched 2.2 innings allowing just one run off one hit but walked seven.
Sawyer Nendick,
Ty Karger and Evenson pitched the final three innings.
Bemidji State will hit the road again and stay in Sioux Falls as it will face University of Sioux Falls for a four-game series next weekend.
