BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University Men's Hockey freshman
Eric Pohlkamp score 37 seconds into overtime to complete the Beavers comeback and take a 1-0 lead over Ferris State University in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association Quarterfinal matchup Friday night at Sanford Center.
Twice trailing by two goals, senior
Eric Martin scored a six-on-five goal with 39 seconds remaining to tie the game and send it into overtime where 1:16 later, Pohlkamp delivered the game-winning overtime goal.
Pohlkamp finished the night with a career-high three points including the game-winning goal while Martin scored twice for his second career two-goal night. Fifth-year senior
Kyle Looft also finished the night with two assists including earning the primary assist on Pohlkamp's game-winner while eight other Beavers recorded a point in the game.
Junior
Mattias Sholl stopped 23 shots by the Bulldogs (10-23-2) including 12 in the final period to earn his seventh consecutive victory in between the pipes and improve to 12-7-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs stunned the Beavers by scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game both of which were scored by Austin McCarthy. Bemidji State would answer before the first period ended when Martin scored his first of the game with 4:52 left in the frame to finish up a
Lleyton Roed drive to the net.
The Beavers would then tie the game in the second period when
Donte Lawson fired the puck from the top of the zone that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season at the 6:04 mark of the second period.
However, 2:28 later, FSU's Emerson Goode put the Bulldogs back into the lead with his seventh goal of the season. The Bulldogs then regained a two-goal lead when Andrew Noel scored his first of the year with just 4:46 to play in the middle frame.
The Beavers would score another critical goal before the period's end when freshman
Kasper Magnussen scored a power-play goal with just 56 seconds left in the period.
The Beavers chased the puck for most of the third period struggling to crack the Bulldogs' defenses but with 39 seconds to play and following a 6-on-4 power play, Martin snapped home a rebounded Looft shot with the Beavers' net empty to tie the game at 4 and send it to overtime.
It was all BSU during the extra frame and Pohlkamp sent the Beavers to victory with his eighth goal of the season.
Bemidji State earned its seventh consecutive victory and remains unbeaten in its last nine games (8-0-1).
The Beavers attempt to advance to the CCHA Semifinals next Saturday with a victory over the Bulldogs tomorrow night. The two teams will battle once again at Sanford Center at 6:07 p.m., Saturday with FSU hoping to force a deciding game three and keep its season alive.
